The mouth is one of the areas a lot of people forget about when it comes to hygiene. We can avoid bad breath, cavities, gum diseases, and lots of other potential risk factors for our health if we could take care of ourselves correctly. Thanks to dentists, we can avoid all these things with their leadership in teaching us how to handle our dental hygiene.

Dentists require about 8 years in college. They need a Bachelor's degree, a doctoral degree in dental medicine or dental surgery and some dental specializations require completion of a residency. Besides at least attending additional school for four years, a dental student needs to pass several exams before they get licensed.

Being a dentist is a lot of pressure, therefore, working under pressure while staying calm is a necessity. Communication and leadership are valuable skills for a good relationship with the rest of the staff and patients. Since Dentists work with the mouth, they’ve got to have good manual dexterity for working with small, intricate spacings and pay good attention to detail. Because of the wide variety of patients, they’ve go to adapt to different people and show enthusiasm for the patients that are nervous.

Besides having a high-paying salary, you get to experience all types of people, and some repay with high levels of kindness, which is good for the soul. All of the workdays are diverse, for you never know what type of patient will come in. The job of dentists is to make people smile, which makes everyone else in a good mood. Not only do you get a stable 6-digit salary, but it’s one of the most stable jobs in America. You can be your own boss, and lead with responsibility and earn respect.

All jobs have cons along with them, and dentists aren’t an exception. You have to attend school for about 8 years, and this can be quite costly. Not to mention, it comes with great levels of responsibility and stress, which can be nerve-wracking for people. Another con, which many people avoid the profession for, is the gross things you’d have to deal with. Dealing with bad breath, rotten teeth, and gum diseases may disgust people to the point of throwing up.

Full-time dentists work 36 hours a week, most of the time interacting and working with patients. Dentists work indoors, either in their own clinic with a small staff, or in established dental practices as associate dentists. Some even have partners. They arrive at their workplaces and usually have staff meetings before the day starts so they can discuss their schedules and plan their patients’ treatments. After seeing about 10-15 patients, they write and review the treatments of the patients and head home.

Because it’s quite difficult to program a computer or robot to perform manual, intricate tasks, dentists will still be needed in the future, so job security won’t be a problem. They get paid around $157,200 and get about one and half weeks to two weeks of vacation.

Going to the dentist is a fun experience, and sometimes I wish that I could be the one using all the cool tools. They work well with people, whether kids or seniors, which makes me look to their adaptability, hoping I can achieve it one day. I love working with my hands, and being a dentist provides a great opportunity for that. They have to work with tools every day, and as someone who likes art, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. I’m quite well with “yuck-facotrs,” because things like mouths or cavities or any stuff like that don’t gross me out. Being a dentist sounds like a good job for me, and I hope I can accomplish it and earn some money.
