His father taught him the basics of mechanics and as a teenager, he started building and repairing cars in his spare time. He later started racing on his bicycle and he became a champion bicycle racer. He was then hired by a prestigious car company, and soon later he was hired to race for the Fiat auto racing team. It didn’t take long for him to become a celebrity. It only took a couple of victories for him to be trending all over town. In 1905 in his first automobile race he defeated Barney Oldfield. Not so long after he was setting records on every important track in the U.S.
With that, he later met William Durant. They both agreed and they created the Chevrolet Motor Company. He made his first car and it was a six-cylinder touring car. He had some issues with William Durant and he decided to leave the company and become an individual designer for race cars. In 1916 he and his brothers founded the Frontenac Motor Company to make racing parts for cars. He was forced to retire in 1938 because he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage.
