A person faces many obstacles and challenges daily. Oftentimes one small moment in someone’s life, a decision, or action can have a big impact not only on their own lives but on the lives of others for years to come. This was the case of Ferruccio Lamborghini who was turned down after trying to make improvements on Ferraris. “Finally, I'd had enough. I slammed the door and vowed I would build my own car. The way I wanted it,” (Volante Issue 6 ‘Rebel With a Cause’). That small moment his ambition of making cars took over, leading him to produce what is now one of the most luxurious and successful automobile companies in the world.
Early Life and Childhood
With the Zodiac sign of a Taurus and being an only child, Ferrucio Lamborghini was born on April 28, 1916. His parents, Antonio and Evelina Lamborghini were grape farmers from the township of Cento in the province of Ferrara, Italy (Smyers). Ferrucio’s father, Antonio was passionate about agriculture and wanted his son to have the same passion. However, Ferrucio had other plans. After he completed primary school he attended a professional institute called “Tadia Brothers” (History-Ferruccio Lamborghini). During the Second World War, he was enrolled in the Italian Air Force, working for the transport sections. In 1944, he became a prisoner of war in the British military forces. While imprisoned he was put to work in their motoring department.
This is where Ferruccio got firsthand experience keeping cars on the road. This was no easy task due to the limited parts and supplies (Ferruccio Lamborghini, A Biography). In 1940, he was drafted into the Italian Royal Air Force, where he served as a mechanic at the Italian garrison on the island of Rhodes territory of the Kingdom of Italy, becoming the supervisor of the vehicle maintenance unit. Lamborghini was taken as a prisoner when the island fell to the British at the end of the war in 1945 and was not able to return home until the next year (Ferruccio Lamborghini Biography). He would use the knowledge that he gained to launch his manufacturing business, named Lamborghini.
Beginnings
Believe it or not, when Ferrucio Lamborghini first came into the vehicle industry, he was a tractor manufacturer (Ferruccio Lamborghini Biography). After the war he returned to his hometown and started converting old war surplus material into much-needed tractors for the local farmers, the Lamborghini tractor business was inaugurated in a small garage, but the business got really successful and had to move into larger premises soon thereafter (Ferruccio Lamborghini, A Biography). At 18 years old he opened a workshop in Renazzo with his lifelong friend Marino Filippini, who many years later would be employed in one of his factories. He was always animated by passion and bravery, and when he could, he would buy an old used car or motorbike that, once fixed up, could easily be seen driven through the dusty country roads (History-Ferruccio Lamborghini). Actually, it was all because of one comment that changed his life. This one comment was from the founder of Ferrari himself, Enzo Ferrari (Ferruccio Lamborghini Biography). Ferrucio complained to Ferrari that he had clutch problems with his Ferrari. Lamborghini thought Ferrari's cars were good but too noisy and rough to be proper road cars, categorizing them as repurposed track cars with poorly-built interiors. "I decided to talk to Enzo Ferrari. I had to wait for him for a long time. 'Ferrari, your cars are rubbish!' I complained. Enzo was furious. 'Lamborghini, you may be able to drive a tractor but you will never be able to handle a Ferrari properly!” It was at this point that Ferrucio Lamborghini decided he would “make a perfect car" (Ferruccio Lamborghini Biography).
Accomplishments
Ferruccio Lamborghini set out to be unlike any other before him, and that’s exactly how his cars were made. There are virtually no other cars on the road that can be confused with a Lamborghini. The marque is instantly identifiable. Whether it’s the sound belting out of a V12 engine’s exhaust, or it’s the low, wide, and chiseled shape of the exterior, you can recognize a Lamborghini the moment you see it. (The Matadors Day). Lamborghini was a natural-born entrepreneur. He was the kind of person who saw an opportunity for a new business and immediately took it. Most people only know about one of his many companies, the world-famous Lamborghini Automobili Corporation. Although this was one of his most famous accomplishments, this was not his first. Previously, he tuned Fiat cars and even started an air conditioning and central heating equipment company. He also had another main business that started his millionaire career, he founded the Lamborghini Trattori, and due to Italy's geographical position away from the main roadways and infrastructure, in this situation, there are some unique opportunities, and Ferruccio was immediately caught up by the simplified bureaucratic load required to begin industrial activities that boost employment and decides to test its technical and mechanical knowledge. He clearly foresees a new market for agriculture automation on large economies of scale (History-Ferruccio Lamborghini). It was beautiful. Gleaming in Vibrant orange, with matching wheels, sculpted engine shroud, satin black split grille and bulging headlamps that would win a staring contest with Clint Eastwood. It was a Tractor (Volante Issue 6 ‘Rebel With a Cause).
