Blood Will Tell
“Blood Will Tell” by April Henry is a mystery book. This book is really good because of how it is structured. The author switches perspectives every chapter or 2. So, you get to read all of the characters' points of view. You also get to read their backstories, and all the problems that they have.
In this book the main characters are Nick, Alexis and Ruby. Nick is an awkward teenager who just moved to Portland. He’s been trying to impress the people at his school. SAR(search and rescue) would be a great opportunity to impress them. Alexis’s life is pretty hard. Especially when her mom has bad thoughts; but she is still very responsible. Although, sometimes she feels like she’s the mom. SAR is when she escapes from her mom, but she still worries about her. Ruby is very serious about SAR. She wants to be a detective when she’s old enough, so she needs to get experience with crime scenes, kidnappings, etc. She is helpful towards most people. She always has a way to get herself or her friends out of serious situations.
The story happens in the city of Portland, Oregon. On the first mission when a girl got lost, it was night time. It was dark and the only thing that had light was the lamps on the hats. On the second mission, where the woman was murdered, it was dark when she was killed. When SAR was at the scene it was day time.
In this book there are a lot of flashbacks. Nick is getting flashbacks of his dad, when he was little and could remember some memories. Nick kept trying to be a hero like his dad. Although, later on during the book, one of the search and rescue members gets accused for murdering the woman. The theme is to always investigate well before accusing people of something that they didn’t do.
Even though this book was good, the author still could have added the reason why the woman was killed. She could have also added why one of the characters mother had suicidal thoughts. In addition, the author could have put the reason why one of the characters' siblings threw up.
I recommend this book mainly because it has an interesting twist. If you love crime solving books with a twist, you should definitely read this. Also, at the end it will throw you off because it is something you never guessed was going to happen.
