Welcome! You are (or your student is) taking what is - in Ms. Camp's personal opinion - one of the most interesting, challenging, and enjoyable courses offered in United States high schools. Even better - your student is at North Shore 10! Together we will explore our world and how we came to this point.
AP World History: Modern is often referred to as "WHAP-M" or simply WHAP." This site often uses the acronym WHAP-M to refer to AP World History: Modern.
Please go to the Syllabus and AP Contract page to read both the course syllabus and the AP contract that both student and responsible adult must sign.
Additionally, please take some time to read the sections below on what the course is and what to expect with WHAP-M. Doing so and visiting the other pages on this site will familiarize you with WHAP-M and provide important course information.
If your student plans to take the AP Exam in May, they must sign up by October 1 on the College Board AP Classroom website. Galena Park ISD pays for part of the exam. If your student is on the free and reduced lunch program, the exam costs $12.50; if your student is not part of the free and reduced lunch program, the cost is $42.50. There is a cancellation fee if a student who has signed up does not take the exam.
College Board is the company who created the curriculum and administers the exam. The AP World History: Modern course page is https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/courses/ap-world-history/course.
In AP World History: Modern, students study the cultural, economic, political, and social developments that have shaped the world from c. 1200 CE to the present. Students analyze texts, visual sources, and other historical evidence and write essays making historical arguments.
AP World History: Modern is a "big history" type course. This means we look at historical developments and compare them, look at causation, and see what stays the same and what changes over time. We look at trends as well as zooming in on various empires, countries, and events.

...a lot of responsibility, writing, reading, and analysis.
AP World History: Modern is a college course taught to high school sophomores. This means that there is more reading, writing, and analysis than in a high school class. It is essential that your student keep up with their study. Students have a list of assigned readings for the fall. If there are changes to it, they are posted on Google Classroom. You may sign up for summaries to be sent to you from Google Classroom.
For more information, see the Expectations page.
