A comma splice occurs when two independent clauses are joined improperly with a period. Independent clauses are sentences that can stand on their own as complete sentences. Comma splices can be eliminated by changing the offending comma into a period to create two separate sentences. You can also convert them into a compound sentence by inserting a coordinating conjunction, also known as the FANBOYS conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so) before the comma, or inserting a semicolon in place of the comma.You can see a variety of these corrections in the videos below, and test your understanding with the exercises provided.Â
