I have no children of my own, and so I am always reluctant to offer advice on parenting, even when it comes to the intersection between parenting and education. However, over seventeen years of teaching I have learned much from my interactions with both children and parents. I've been able to make general observations of successful students, and had many discussions with their guardians about how they attempted to foster that success. I offer this information in that spirit, in the hopes that it will be of some assistance.
