Each month we will create reading goals for our entire classroom that we will work hard to achieve. 

Sept. - Choosing "Just Right Books", staying focused during reading time and using decoding strategies to help us read.

Oct. and Nov.- Retelling: Discussing the characters, setting, plot, problem and solution

-Making Connections to a text: T-S, T-T, T-W

Nov. and Dec. - Creating Visualizations

During reading conferences, students will choose reading strategies they would like to work on to assist them with decoding and comprehension when reading a text. 

Sept. - Nov.- Character Building texts to support a positive learning environment at school and at recess.

Dec. - Vocabulary building text and Holiday Themes.

Each week students will be introduced to a word focus which will have a specific theme and we will review and practise varoius words throughout the week.  

Term 1: For example:

• Short  and long vowel sounds

• READ TO SELF for 20 minutes - Choosing reading animals to help us read the words and understand the text.

• Reading conference with our teacher - setting independent reading goals.

• Buzzing about our book (retelling) with a partner or our teacher.

• Word Study - Learning, reviewing and playing with words and specific sounds that letters create.

• Shared Reading: Reading a text together repeatedly and fluently during the week and discussing prior knowledge, making predictions, asking questions, making connections and inferences, discussing author's identity and author's message, and discussing punctuation and capitalization.

• Read Alouds: Listening to texts read to us and talking about the book: retelling the story (characters, setting, plot, problem, solution, author's message), making connections (T-S, T-T, T-W).

• Identifying texts as FICTION or NON-FICTION - justifying our choices.

• Completing oral and written retells to explain what happened in a text.

• Making Connections to a text: T-S, T-T, T-W

• Creating Visualizations to match the information in the text

Sept - Nov.:

• Brainstorm ideas about an assigned topic.

• Create a list of our brainstormed ideas.

• Create 5-8 complete sentences about the big idea.

• Reread and edit our work - checking for capitalization, punctuation, spelling and does it make sense?

Nov-Dec.: 

• Include descriptive devices to enhance our writing - 

a) Onomatopoeia b) Alliteration c) Powerful Adjectives and Verbs

d) Similes e) Sensory description
