The Enhanced Construction Program (ECP) in partnership with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) Local 1946 in London. It provides students with hands-on experience and industry-recognized training in carpentry, creating a direct pathway into a skilled trade career.
Grade 11 and 12 students attend their construction, English, and Math classes on-site at the Carpenters Union Local 1946 facility at 3800 Highbury Ave S, London.
Students learn essential skills such as general shop safety, basic layouts, formwork, drywall, and steel stud framing. They also receive safety certifications recognized by the industry, including Working at Heights, confined space awareness, and hoisting and rigging.
Participants can earn up to 8 co-op credits and graduate with their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) red seal, which is an advantage for post-secondary opportunities.
A key benefit is the opportunity for a co-op placement with a UBC Local 1946 contractor, with a goal of direct entry into a carpentry apprenticeship for successful graduates.
Requirements: Students typically need 14 credits (including Grade 9 and 10 Math and English) before starting Grade 11, must be at least 16 years old before the co-op placement begins, and need to arrange their own transportation to the union site.
Information Sessions: Information sessions are held periodically for interested students and parents/caregivers to learn more about the program and application process.
