Safety is very important. Follow all the classroom rules on safe and responsible behaviour. Borrowing school equipment or leaving class to take photos is a privilege that can be suspended or revoked if you do not show the level of responsibility needed to do so safely and maturely.
Borrowed equipment must be returned directly to the teacher at least 5 minutes before the end of class and should never be lent to anyone else. You are responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen equipment that you have taken out of the classroom.
Signed permission forms are needed to borrow equipment or leave class for assignments without an accompanying staff member.
Phones can be an important tool in Photography class, but there is a time and place. Phones are to be turned to silent mode or turned off and put away in a pocket or bag before entering the classroom to avoid distractions for yourself and others. Check with your teacher before using a phone. Responsible phone use will be covered in class. The school code of conduct applies.
School computers are for curricular activities, not for entertainment or personal uses. The school code of conduct applies. On a school computer there is no expectation of privacy because it is a school tool not a personal device.
Be productive during class time, even if you plan to do work at home. Working in class gives you the opportunity to get extra help or see if you are meeting the expectations of the project. Please don't respond to "What are you planning in class today?" with some version of "I'm planning not to do anything at all productive and have good intentions of doing it at home tonight." There is usually something that can be done now.
You are expected to bring a binder, paper, and a pen or pencil to class each day. Printing digital handouts is optional, but you should copy them to your own drive in an organized way to help study for tests.
Respect the rights of others to concentrate and learn. There are multiple sections in this classroom. Focusing during your lesson and being respectfully quiet during the lessons for others will let everyone have a chance to do their best. You are clever enough to find a silent way to communicate with others if it is really needed (notes, typing, interpretive dance) while the other section is being taught. Phones are to be turned to silent mode or turned off and put away in a pocket or bag before entering the classroom to avoid distractions for yourself and others.
Civility and good manners are to be used in interactions with staff and students. This includes online commenting, inside the classroom, and especially on assignments outside class. Being kind and asking first, then waiting for permission are usually good places to start if in doubt.
Files for photos and projects must be backed up to your school drive in an organized well-labelled set of folders even if you are using other storage media or personal devices/cameras. If you are using your own cameras/devices, bring your own download cord or card reader.
Photos are to be backed up on the day they are taken if you are at school. These expectations are to help you avoid that head/desk feeling when your usb is corrupted, your SD card goes missing, you accidentally save over a file or your laptop suddenly becomes a paperweight. Project folder must be backed up regularly to your school Google Drive account as well. Two copies of everything is better than one!
Many digital programs sort files alphabetically. Always save every file that will be handed in with your last name as the first part of the file name. Then add information about the project. For example, Collins_CloseUp_3 or Collins_RuleOfThirds.
The school attendance policy will be followed. Regular and punctual attendance is very important for success. If you arrive late and it is in the first 20 minutes of class, go directly to class. If you are late longer than 20 minutes, go to the office first.
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make efforts to get caught up as soon as possible. Please check all online sources of information on websites and the Google Classroom while still home or as soon as you return to school, and then check in with your teacher. You may have to meet with your teacher outside class time if there is a lot to get caught up on. Ask for a discussion about extensions before projects are due. Have your responsible adult contact the school on the day you are away in order to validate your absence and make you eligible to submit missed tests/assignments.
If you miss a test for a valid reason, you may need to come in outside class time to write it.
Assignments are to be handed in regularly and in the requested format for marking. Check where to put them and which file types are expected. Errors will delay evaluation of work.
Files handed in to the Hand In drive or the Google Classroom depending on the project and need to be named with your last name first. Just your last name, not your full name or first name unless you share a last name with someone in the class. Then the file name should contain the name of the assignment. For example, collins_magazinepage.jpg or collins_restoration.psd
Due Dates and Late Marks - A due date is when the work is expected and when the class moves on to a new project. Always plan to done on the due date. Late marks of 10% for the first school day and 5% for following days up to 5 days may apply. A deadline is the last day work will be accepted. A mark of zero may be recorded on the due date. That mark can become permanent on the deadline.
Early submissions - Work handed in online before midnight will be counted as being handed in that day unless otherwise noted. Work that is submitted early can be revised based on teacher feedback and resubmitted before the deadline for reevaluation. If you are resubmitting work after a due date, please make the teacher aware of what was submitted and where it is because older folders are not checked every day.
Do not submit work that does not meet the originality requirements. Some projects will require you to take your own photos or create original drawings. Read instructions carefully to make sure you are not making your project unmarkable. Never use another artist's work as part of your work without express permission of the teacher for that project. Only photos you take are originals, not photos taken by your group. Copying the work or ideas of another as your own can result in academic penalty. Please be inspired by other artworks rather than copying. Work must be created by you during the time of this course to be considered. Do not submit older photos or projects. Major projects must be completed at least 50% in class or with your teacher outside class time.
All students have a grace period until the deadline, which unless otherwise stated is at midnight, in order to hand in late work. This does not mean there is time in class to work on overdue projects. Please come in outside class to finish up. In very exceptional circumstances this can be extended, but it will be case by case in advance. Negotiate extensions in advance if at all possible. Check posted instructions to see if late marks apply.
