Grade 4 Learning Activities

Conversation-starters: Opportunities for Critical Thinking

Planning: Predict the species of wildlife that you will find in the garden who may become a problem and plan for ways to find growing success.

Growing: Ongoing watering and monitoring of the garden.

Monitoring: Students are encouraged to design their own grade-appropriate monitoring system to record observations from the garden.

Regularly monitor the garden for evidence of wildlife (pollinators, insects, birds and herbivores). Gather photo evidence of the wildlife’s use of the garden.

Communicating: Map-making and communication strategies.

Grade 4 Science: Habitats and Communities

· In what ways does a garden create a supportive habitat?

· Investigate what type of wildlife would further benefit the productivity of the garden, then design and create that habitat in your garden (ie add pollinator plants, a toad abode)

· Consider which animals have become part of the community that are hindering success of the garden, and find an innovative way to encourage them to find a new habitat (ie scarecrows, CDs as shiny reflectors, planting ‘unfriendly’ plants).

Grade 4 Social Studies: Political and Physical Regions of Canada

· Develop a poster to share the availability of food from your garden with your family.

· Develop a paper or digital map to show what is growing, and what is available, and when it will be ready.
