A team of Goodwood marshals decamped just down the road to Home Farm to muck in at Open Farm Sunday in June, invited by one of our club charities, the Goodwood Education Trust.
In addition to parking 600 cars and welcoming thousands of visitors to the event, there was also a trio of rebellious sheep to marshal back to their pen!
Over an end-of-day drink at the farm shop, Education Trust Manager Catherine told us about a busy summer for the charity, including three term-time programmes and three more in the holidays…
“Farm visits run each week for primary and secondary schools - the children love meeting the animals, making butter and learning about careers in agriculture. Our Forest School runs every day during term time, helping children struggling in mainstream education or at risk of exclusion. The Children in the Community programme supports children facing challenges in life, such as a family member in prison or being a young carer.
“Through the summer holidays, the Trust is a provider for the Holiday, Activity and Food scheme. This offers free activity days for children eligible for means-tested free school meals. We also run paid-for Forest Adventures and we host Community Days for groups of children facing challenges in life.”
You can find out more from Catherine and her team when they join us at the motor circuit for the club’s Charity Track Days in December.
We presented the 2023 Club Awards at the December training day.
Cadet of the Year
The ‘Cadet of the Year’ is awarded to the Cadet Marshal that has made the greatest contribution to their role and the Club. This was awarded to Honey Poll for being a fantastic ambassador of Goodwood Marshals Club and our Cadet Marshals and for contributing to the club by providing a snapshot of their "life as a Cadet Marshal" for use on the club recruitment stand.
Newcomer of the Year
The ‘Newcomer of the Year’ is awarded in memory of Franio van Wyk to the Marshal that has joined the Club in the last two years and made the greatest contribution to their role and the Club. This was awarded to Warren Poll for being an excellent new Marshal and an enthusiastic recent committee member.
The Kirk Elleker Award
This award is awarded by the Committee in recognition of any Member who has made an outstanding contribution to the Club or to Motorsport in general. This was awarded to Katie Pybus for being lovely and helpful at every event no matter what role she serves or who she speaks to.
The Goodwood Marshals Club Marshal of the Year
Nominated by Club members. ‘The Goodwood Marshals Club Marshal of the Year’ is awarded in memory of Rob Foote to the Marshal who has made the greatest contribution to the Club or to Motorsport in general that year. The winner of the Marshal of the Year award will also be the Club’s nomination for the Motorsport UK Marshal of the Year. This was jointly awarded to Tom and Liz Rowland for devoting so much of their time to the club recruitment stand at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and for sharing their experiences of venues across the country to inspire others to go and sample other events at new circuits. They are two incredibly dedicated Marshals who are usually found in the Pit Lane and on the Startline while following the BTCC around the UK... you may have even spotted their Goodwood Marshals Club badges on ITV4.
Congratulations to all our award recipients!
