Removing the "fluff" of data that is unnecessary so that you can focus on what is most important


Non-academic example

When creating a map of the subways in a major city, you will only include pertinent information to subway riders. You won't include information like highways and road names. 


Academic example

In a standardized test question, identify what the question is actually asking. Ignore all unnecessary information.
