YES, definitely. My position is to do as much as is legally possible within the resources we have, and to pursue additional resources as necessary. This is included in legislation I initiated and our board supported (SB 92), and which passed last session (2019), regarding safety in our schools, including mental health services.
Yes
YES, with clarification. I support increased regulation on gun sales and access to fire arms and I would continue to advocate for greater mental health supports and appropriate staffing to increase the safety and well-being of our students, teachers and other district staff. I have worked on these specific issues previously as part of the district wide Student Safety Committee and continue to advance education and informed dialogue to end gun violence through a public Facebook forum Be the People (to end gun violence) that I manage. However, I also believe that Montana is a state with a long history and purposeful familiarity with guns as tools and/or a means for providing for one’s family through hunting. Given the prevalence of guns in our community, I believe gun safety education and training for youth provides great value and improves everyone’s safety. As such, I am not opposed to the schools partnering to provide gun/hunter safety training and/or allowing well managed and appropriately monitored gun sports at the middle and high school level.
Yes, the safety of students and teachers is the priority. However, making schools gun-free zones didn't prove to be helpful to ensure this safety.
Yes
YES, absolutely to gun limits on all district property. I think the district should reevaluate the programs we have currently and go from there. Investing might mean allocation of time and community partnerships not just money.
