The Challenge is a friendly competition between workplaces that encourages staff to think about, explore and celebrate alternative work commutes for the benefit of their health and wellness. In addition, the Challenge can support workplace sustainability and/or parking and transportation initiatives.
The Challenge engages staff monthly between the end of April and October. On any day during the last week of every month, staff are encouraged to log just ONE DAY's work commute which counts towards their workplace's rank on a live leaderboard. Participants are asked to specify both their "normal" commute and their Walk/Ride Day commute (see What is Walk/Ride Day below). By measuring the difference between these commutes, Green Streets can track changes towards healthier / greener commuting.
The Challenge is open to all commuters (drivers, carpoolers, T and commuter rail riders, cyclists, walkers etc.) and all Challenge workplaces are winners in their industry or size category.
Walk/Ride Day is Green Streets' community day of transportation awareness that takes place on the last Friday of the month. Walk/Ride Day can be celebrated / observed year round while the Commuter Challenge runs from the end of April through the end of October.
Participants are invited to log their Walk/Ride Day commute (or their plans for their commute) as well as their normal commute pattern. The Walk/Ride Day commute they log could be their Friday commute or a commute from another day during the last week of the month. Staff who work from home on Friday or take a vacation day may report a commute for a different day of the week.
All workplaces are rewarded and recognized with an award at our annual awards celebration. Past celebrations have taken place at the Massachusetts State House Boston City Hall, Cambridge City Hall (2019) or at one of our participating workplaces.
The three workplaces with the largest participation for each size category (large, medium, small workplaces) receive an office ice cream and fruit party. The Challenge leaderboard (visible on our website under Commuter Challenge) also ranks organizations based on the share of staff making a green and/or a healthy change to their commute and based on staff already commuting in healthy and sustainable ways.
All who log a commute through Green Streets' mobile-friendly check-in tool are entered into our monthly raffle. Raffle items include kick scooters, water bottles, bike locks, outerwear, ferry and bus tickets, bike rentals, shoes and more.
In addition, all those who check in can receive discounts / free items from local merchants who have joined our retail network. Our retail network map lists retailers and their offers. To claim an offer, participants can use their confirmation email for logging a commute, or they can print out coupons from the map. Participants and workplaces are also encouraged to ask new retailers to join the network. Retailers can easily sign up by clicking on the Become a Retail Partner link on the bottom right of the map.
Many workplaces also conduct an in-house raffle or provide another incentive just for workplace participants to add an extra incentive to log a commute.
By giving staff permission to experiment with their commute, your workplace is showing that they care about the impact of employees' commutes on their health and well-being, and on our community's environment and traffic congestion.
Studies show that individuals who get moderate exercise before work, even a few times a week, are happier and healthier than those who don't. For example, a 2014 study of 18,000 British households shows that switching from car travel to active travel or public transportation improves psychological well-being. Drivers are 13% more likely to report that they are constantly under strain and unable to concentrate compared to active travelers*.
Bostonians lost 164 hours to traffic in 2018 according to transportation analytics firm INRIX. The Challenge can help reduce this congestion by encouraging Boston-area workplaces to reduce car trips at least once month. Transportation research shows that removing a small share of cars off the road has a larger than proportional impact on congestion. Transportation for Massachusetts shared that a 5% reduction in cars on the road leads to a 20% reduction in congestion (See this Boston Magazine article for more).
In 2018, our Challenge influenced almost 40% of participating drivers to eliminate at least 1 car trip over the course of the 7 Challenge days. These behavior changes led to 750 fewer car trips compared to normal commuting patterns. By growing workplace participation and the number of workplaces, Green Streets hopes the Challenge can have an even larger impact on congestion in the future.
