Agriculture is one of the oldest industries in human society and has historically been the industry with the largest workforce for the longest period. This is because agriculture has always borne the crucial mission of producing and supplying food stably, which is essential for human survival.
However, in Japan, with the rise of industrial and service sectors driven by the development of a capitalist society, the agricultural workforce has declined sharply, and the industry has shifted to a structure that relies significantly on imports for agricultural products. That said, no matter how much the agricultural workforce decreases or its position as an industry declines, agriculture remains indispensable for human survival, as it continues to bear the noble mission of producing agricultural products.
The key challenge lies in how to improve agricultural productivity within a capitalist society while simultaneously maintaining and preserving farmland as an essential means of agricultural production for future generations. Addressing these issues head-on is not only a responsibility for those of us living in the present but also a mission for those who entrust the next generation with the future of society.
In our research lab, we are committed to analyzing the realities and structure of various agricultural issues and exploring better approaches for the future of agriculture.
My expertise lies in analyzing the labor market and agricultural structure. While labor is indispensable in any industry, agriculture is unique in that it has relied on a large workforce even before the emergence of capitalist society. As a result, the interaction between agriculture and other industries through the labor market has always been a critical issue. The relationship between agriculture and other industries through the labor market affects agricultural structures on one hand due to the decline in the agricultural workforce, while on the other hand, other industries secure a large workforce from agriculture to support their business development. This phenomenon varies significantly by region and country, but it is a universal trend in areas influenced by capitalism to some extent.
Through fieldwork, I focus on elucidating the relationship between agriculture and non-agricultural industries, emphasizing regional characteristics in agricultural structures (such as the differentiation of peasant classes) and examining the future prospects of agricultural producers.
