Hi! If you've stumbled across my website from an old post-- thanks for stopping by! I've now graduated. Certain medical conditions require a medical consult before we may start your treatment due to school policy. We wish to ensure your safety during and after your appointment at our dental hygiene clinic. Your time is valuable so I wish to avoid having to re-appoint or have to dismiss you based on certain medical conditions, so please read carefully if any of the conditions listed below are applicable to you.
Please bring a list of all your current medications and supplements, with dosages, along with the office telephone and fax number of your medical provider for your first appointment. If there is indeed a need for a medical clearance, we can attempt to fax your medical provider a form to clear you for dental hygiene treatment. If the office of your medical provider is closed, we will give you a form to get signed and faxed to our dental clinic or brought back to your next appointment.
***While this may not always void the need for a medical clearance, you may also get try bring written note by your doctor on their letter head stating that either there are no contraindications to you receiving dental hygiene treatment, or that dental hygiene treatment is not contraindication with modifications (i.e. changes to local anesthetics with vasoconstrictor).***
Important: Patients prescribed an inhaler within the last year must bring their non-expired inhaler to all appointments. We cannot provide treatment if you do not bring your inhaler if it was prescribed within a year of your visit and must dismiss/reappoint you per clinic policy.
Medical Consult Required with Faculty Member and/or Physician:
History of or current diagnosis of:
*Angina (Chest Pain)
*Heart Murmur
*Hepatitis C
*TB/Tuberculosis
*Prosthetic joint/hip replacement
*Active Mononucleosis aka “Mono” (Epstein-Barr Virus)
*Diabetes
*Immunosuppression (HIV, Cancer drugs, Anti-rejection drugs for transplants, etc.)
*Organ transplant history
*Radiation treatment history
*Pregnancy
*Use of certain dietary agents [Fenfluramine (Fen-Phen), Dexfenfluramine (Redux)]
*Sickle Cell Anemia
*Use of prescribed blood thinners
Postpone Treatment
Active herpes (cold sore): Reschedule in 2 weeks. We examine for lesions during the head and neck exam at each visit and you will be reappointed if any herpetic lesions are found.
Elevated blood pressure (Over 160-199 systolic and/or 95-99 diastolic). Re-appoint w/ possible referral to MD for evaluation.
COVID-19 symptoms/no "green checkmark" from campus survey.

Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
Pulmonary edema
Congestive heart failure
Cerebrovascular accident (stroke)
Coronary artery bypass graph (CABG)
Arrhythmia (controlled)
Pacemaker
Bisphosphonate use
Kidney, liver, or heart disease
No Dental Hygiene Treatment Permitted per Program Policy
Asthma/COPD but no inhaler or expired inhaler brought with patient
History of the following within the last 6 months
Organ transplant
Joint replacement
Heart attack
Stroke
Blood pressure over 200 systolic and/or 100 diastolic
Blood pressure is measured at each visit after reviewing health history
Uncontrolled diabetes, congestive heart failure, angina, or hyperthyroidism
Pregnancy without a medical consult
