HS Art

About the Class

HS Art is offered to 8th grade students who have taken Art 1 & 2 in middle school, and submitted a portfolio of successful work to Mrs. Brazell.

HS Art students understand how to use the elements of art and principles of design to create self-driven compositions in a variety of media.

HS Art students will create in depth analysis of their work and the works of others. Students will engage in critiques and reflections in order to evaluate their own skill mastery and establish individual artistic goals to be met throughout the year.

HS Art students will continue to read about the works of past and contemporary artists and be able to identify art movements and styles.

Junior VASE

Jr. VASE (Visual Art Scholastic Event) is the annual UIL art contest held for students at the middle school level. It is held in the Spring for our region.

All HS Art students will be required to create a piece that follows VASE guidelines and expectations that will be graded as a major project. Students are encouraged to participate in the actual event with the piece they create, but are not required to attend.

Participating in the event gives students valuable experience in developing and assessing their art. As part of the event, students must verbally defend their process and motivation to a judge, while also showing a strong grasp of art-making techniques and composition in their artwork.

More information will be given out in class during the beginning of the Spring semester.
