Science 9 is a general science course which prepares students for higher level courses in high school. Through Science 9 students will be exposed to four major units setting the foundation for the strands of future science courses. The Cellular Reproduction unit prepares students for future studies in Biology by introducing such concepts as mitosis/ meiosis, asexual/ sexual reproduction, and genetics. The Atoms and Elements unit prepares students for future studies in Chemistry by introducing such concepts as the parts and structure of the atom, the periodic table, and types of chemical bonds. The Electricity unit prepares students for future studies in physics by bridging the gap between math and science. Finally, the Space Exploration unit prepares students for future studies in Earth Science, and here at Lockview for Astronomy 12, by introducing the definitions for the types of celestial bodies and the tools used to investigate space.
Science 9 also begins the introduction to how to work effectively and safely in a lab. Students learn various skills which will be used through many science courses as well as safe handling procedures for equipment and material in the lab. Student’s will also continue to explore the connections between science, technology, society, and the environment.
