Safety is Everyone's Responsibility
Teachers, Students, School Administration and Regional Staff all have roles to play to ensure safety in a science lab. Please click on the sections below to expand on each role.
Follow all safety practices and procedures outlined in the science safety guidelines and the Provincial Code of Conduct.
Provide instruction on safe lab procedures and closely supervise student activities.
Anticipate potential hazards in advance and take appropriate precautions.
Review safety protocols and specific hazards with students before each lab activity.
Keep all lab equipment in good working condition and report faulty equipment or hazards in writing.
Maintain dated records of all lab-related injuries and report them immediately to administration.
Never leave students unsupervised in a science lab or storage area.
Collect and keep information about students with medical conditions (e.g., allergies, epilepsy) that may require special attention.
Participate in WHMIS and first-aid training as required by legislation.
Provide a lesson plan that can be safely followed by a substitute teacher.
Secure labs and storage areas by locking them when not in use.
Refuse to conduct lab activities if safety is compromised, and document concerns in writing to the principal.
Follow all school science safety procedures and posted notices.
Listen to and follow all instructions from their science teacher.
Perform experiments only with the permission and supervision of the teacher.
Immediately report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or accidents to the teacher.
Accept responsibilities for their actions in accordance with the Provincial School Code of Conduct.
Ensure that science laboratories are supervised only by teachers with appropriate qualifications and expertise.
Prohibit substitute teachers from overseeing lab activities unless they are familiar with students, subject matter, and safety protocols.
Ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment as outlined in the Provincial Code of Conduct.
Maintain up-to-date inventories of lab materials and equipment and provide copies to the local fire department.
Respond in writing to any reported safety concerns.
Conduct regular safety inspections and address issues where possible at the school level.
Escalate unresolved safety concerns to the appropriate Regional Staff.
Provide accommodations and ensure safety for students with disabilities or diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Ensure class sizes and lab enrolments align with facility capacities for safe supervision.
Ensure compliance with all science safety practices and guidelines.
Provide regular in-service and safety training for teachers.
Ensure that school facilities are safe for all students, including those with disabilities.
Arrange for hazardous waste disposal on a periodic basis.
