High Schools in Nova Scotia were issued a set of Laboratory Microburners that operate with a butane fuel source. In some instances these may replace traditional "piped-in" propane gas Bunsen burners. Schools using these devices must adhere to the Laboratory Microburner Safety Guidelines (last updated in September 2024).
The laboratory micro burner produces a flame and burns at a high temperature. The burner is stable and tip-resistant. Push-button auto ignition makes lighting the burner easy. However, all burners present fire hazards so it is important that the following guidelines be observed.
