Deadline: May 1, 2025
The Wendy Elaine Nelles Memorial Award (the WEN Award)
is a cash prize established by friends of Wendy Nelles (1955–2018) in partnership with The Word Guild—an organization of Canadian writers and editors who are Christian—which Wendy cofounded.
“The WEN Award celebrates the life, career, and faith of a woman who cared passionately about teaching, mentoring, and encouraging writers,” says journalist Thomas Froese, who initiated the award in honour of his friend.
“Each year, we invite eligible young writers to apply who strive to emulate the virtues of leadership, perseverance, commitment to excellence, commitment to Christian faith, and good character,” adds writer and communications consultant Patricia Paddey, another of Nelles’ friends. “Those who knew and loved Wendy saw these virtues amply displayed in her life.”
Awarded to developing writers in Canada, submissions are open to post-secondary students enrolled in Journalism, Literature, Media, and Communications programs. To apply, students must complete a written questionnaire, including a character reference.
In 2025, the cash prize will be $750, to be used for the winner’s writing development.

Dartmouth NDP Community Award
Amount: $1,000
Deadline: May 30, 2025
Application details:
The Dartmouth NDP Community Service Award is all about recognizing students who give their time and energy to building stronger communities. It celebrates volunteerism – the time you've spent helping out, the length of your commitment, and the kinds of things you’ve done with and for organizations that matter to you.
It’s also about the why – what motivates you to show up, what you’ve learned through those experiences, and how that work has shaped you.
This award especially honours students who have volunteered in elections or with political campaigns at any level – municipal, provincial, or federal – as part of their commitment to civic engagement.
There are lots of awards and scholarships that recognize academic achievement, athletic excellence, or leadership in student government – and we encourage you to pursue those too, if they reflect your experience.
But this award is here to celebrate something different: your dedication to community, your passion for making a difference, and your belief in collective action.
Your application should include:
A 250 word letter about your volunteering experience.
A reference letter from a teacher, mentor, or someone you volunteer with/for, etc.
Your CV/resume
