Land Acknowledgement of Mi'kma'ki
Special events/meetings/written:
“I (we) would like to begin by acknowledging that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) People first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources, but instead recognized Mi’kmaw and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.”

Pronunciation:
Mi’kma’ki – Meegmagee
Mi’kmaq/Mi’kmaw - Meegmaw
Wolastoqiyik – Woolastuk
Definitions:
Mi’kma’ki – Ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq People (NS, NB, PEI, Gaspe of Quebec)
Wolastoqiyik – “People of the beautiful river” Indigenous Peoples living along the St. John River (NB)
Unceded – Never surrendered, unyielded. Refers to land and resources in the acknowledgement.
Treaty – A formally concluded and ratified agreement between nations.

Water Bottles – Reminder to students to bring your water bottle to school each day.
Jr High
You can now order school lunches for Feb 22 - March 7. Ordering for these dates must be completed before 12:00 PM on Wednesday, Feb 18. Head to https://nslunch.ca to place your order. Late orders cannot be accepted.
Jr. High Dance: The junior high dance that was scheduled for last Thursday is rescheduled to this Thursday, February 19th from 7:00-930pm. Students from grades 7, 8 and 9 are invited to attend. The song request list is still up by the jr high calendar. For those students who signed in guests, Mr. Eason will let you know if your guest is approved to attend. The cost to attend is $8.
Jr. High Badminton The final badminton tryout will be Wednesday (the 18th) from 4:30-6pm. See you on the court!

- Within our school community there are several students who have a potentially life-threatening allergy (anaphylaxis) to foods, predominantly to peanuts/tree nuts, shellfish, and eggs.

- We feel the best way to reduce the risk of accidental exposure to these students is to respectfully ask for the co-operation of the parents/guardians within this school community to talk to your children about severe food allergies and please follow the below avoidance strategies:
- Eat only food which they have brought from home unless it is packaged, clearly labelled and approved by their parents.
- Wash hands with soap and water before and after eating.
- Not share food, utensils or containers.
- Place food on a napkin or wax paper rather than in direct contact with a desk or table.

BCS recognizes that this can be difficult times for families financially. Please reach out to us if you need support as we have access to services that can help students/families. If we don't have them, we can always work to point folks in the right direction.

· Liverpool food is open as normal (Tuesdays 10-1)
· Mahone Bay Food Bank (2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 9:00-11:00)
