Mahone Bay Alternate School is located in the Mahone Bay Centre, which is housed in the historic building that was formerly the Mahone Bay School, built in 1914. Today, the centre is a community hub offering programs, events, and services, while also hosting our alternate school. Mahone Bay Alternate School is a junior and senior alternate education program operated by the South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE). It provides a supportive and flexible learning environment for students who have not experienced success in traditional schools, with small class sizes that allow for more individualized attention. The program emphasizes firm goals and flexible means, helping students meet clear academic expectations while accommodating their learning needs. In addition, Mahone Bay Alternate School is considered a transition program with the goal to help students return to their home school with the skills, confidence, and support needed for ongoing success in school and beyond.
Junior High (Grades 7–9): Students work on building academic skills, confidence, and personal growth in preparation to successfully rejoin their home school.
Senior High (Grades 10–12): Students take courses that count toward a Nova Scotia high school diploma. Students can graduate directly from Mahone Bay Alternate School, or transition back to their home school, where more courses and opportunities are available.
When a student would benefit from a different learning environment to meet their unique needs, enrolling in an alternate program may be considered as an option.
Students may enter one of SSRCE's Alternate Programs through the Program Planning Process, which starts at the student's home school with a team meeting. This process is a collaborative, team-based approach used in Nova Scotia to support a student’s learning and well-being. It reflects the province’s commitment to inclusive education, ensuring all students have the opportunity to learn and participate fully, in school. Parents and guardians work together with the home school to explore programming choices and determine the best path to support the student’s success.
