All About Apples!!!

Kindergarten learned all about apples in September. Maverick Cowan and his family brought enough apples for all the kindergarten students to have their very own apple. Before we ate them we used our senses to describe what they: looked like, felt like, and smelled like. After we ate them we got to add what they tasted like. We also made some apple dip to go along with the apples. Thank you to the Cowan family for the great apples!

Elementary Highlights

Mrs. Perron

September has flown by at the Elementary. There have been a lot of outdoor learning opportunities. Throughout this month we had two grade levels either have a field trip or a speaker in the classroom.

In second grade the students have been learning about the life cycle of Monarch butterflies. Students collected caterpillars, brought in milkweed to feed to them, and noted observations as each caterpillar made their chrysalis. Emily from Grimes Farm came to the Elementary and talked with the students about the difference between a Monarch and a Viceroy. She was able to identify the gender of the butterflies and talked with the students on how they can identify which Monarch butterfly is male or female. Before releasing the butterflies, Emily talked about the importance of tagging the butterflies and informed the students that the butterflies will be starting their journey to Mexico.

At the beginning of September our fourth graders attended Farm to Table at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds in Marshalltown. Students were able to have hands-on experiences with farm equipment and livestock. Our fourth graders learned about farm safety with farm equipment and ATV’s. During their learning, the students learned about farm tools that were used before tractors were invented. One of the fascinating facts that the students learned was that marshmallows come from pig bone marrow. The students loved watching Gus, sheep dog, herd sheep.

These experiences that our second and fourth graders got to experience are great connections to curriculum and real world experiences.

Activities in the Shop

Mr. Boerm has been keeping his classes busy this month! The general shop class has built tables for the lunch ladies to use. The carpentry class worked on wood engraving pictures for the silent auction to support Patty in her fight. The 9th grade created 2x4 3D printed animals. Can’t wait to see what else they create!
