Habitat refers to the home of a creature, plant, or organism; a place where they thrive, grow, and die. In this show, I explore themes of recollection and reconciliation in ever-changing, often temporary spaces. I unite the past and present by depicting living things together in ways that do not exist in reality. I juxtapose nature and interiors to create a surreal sense of chaos. In my work, I examine my own process of grieving a time and place to which I cannot return.
Thick layers of bright acrylic paint build the surface of the work. Underneath are coats of gesso applied generously with a palette knife to achieve a rich, textured surface before I begin painting, creating a sense of tactility. The narrative lies in the minuscule details of the pieces, inviting the viewer to step in close.
Throughout my artistic practice, I have experimented with various media, including written poetic work, which is intrinsically connected to my visual work. My poetry conveys the same themes as my paintings: home, security, and nature.
