This was the first online international exchange between Zhongyuan Elementary School and Saga Elementary School in Japan, with participation from our Grade 4 Class 6 students.
Since Grade 4, students have been guided by foreign teacher Miss Sharon to develop research and inquiry skills, exploring indigo dyeing and the local culture of Sanxia.
This year, through the international education program, they were honored to share their learning with elementary students from Saga City through an online exchange.
During the activity, students introduced the features of our school, including the Indigo Dyeing Workshop and Sanxia Old Street.
They also look forward to welcoming Japanese students to Taiwan in the future, to experience indigo dyeing and explore the charm of Sanxia Old Street and Hakka culture.
The exchange also included Chinese-Japanese language interaction, with lively discussions and meaningful cultural learning on both sides.
About the Indigo Dyeing Workshop at Zhongyuan Elementary School
The Hakka people use a traditional technique called Indigo Dyeing to create rich blue shades on fabric, showcasing the beauty of this ancient craft.
At our school, students learn this traditional art through the Indigo Dyeing Workshop. All sixth graders create their own indigo-dyed clothing as part of their graduation project, and proudly present their work in a fashion show during the graduation ceremony—leaving them with lasting and meaningful memories.
