Started in 1945 by Mrs. Marjorie Learn, Bookworms started as a female only club so girls could learn about the library and read good books. The club would meet twice a month at Mrs. Learn's home, and would enjoy refreshments and snacks together after discussing library matters.
The club was very active in school life, participating in Homecoming events, throwing parties, and holding an annual "Traveling Dinner." At this event, they would prepare a six course meal, but each course would be served at a different members' house! They would eat each part of the meal and then walk together to another home to eat the next. This tradition lasted from 1945 until 1962, ending upon Mrs. Learn's retirement.
The club was exclusively for high school girls and maintained a high membership level through the mid 1970's.

In 1978, the club admitted its first male member, and was also opened up to younger students in 7th and 8th grades. Headed now by Mrs. Marcella Brightman, the club was still very active in school life, but focused more on children's literature and events. By 1980, the club had switched exclusively to elementary students.
Bookworms continued through the 1970's and remained an all-female club until 1978. It was also strictly a high school club for students in grades 9 and up.
Throughout the 1990's and into the 2010's, Bookworms remained an elementary club, but added in competitive aspects such as the Scholastic Reading Counts program and WEMTA's Battle of the Books. Headed by Mrs. Lauren Norton, the Bookworms became more of an all encompassing term for all extracurricular library programs, rather than a traditionally structured club.
Bookworms evolved once again when Mrs. Mika Chetto took over the library in 2015. Middle school and High school students were added back into the mix, although they would meet and partipate in their own events separate from the elementary students. A Middle School Division of Battle of the Books was added in 2016 and a high school division in 2018. Bookworms also began hosting an annual school-wide Readathon in 2022.
