Read-a-Thon
The Read-A-Thon is an event the students anticipate all year!
How it Works
Students and teachers log reading minutes on their RAT accounts and parents are encouraged to share the donation pages on social media. Friends and family of the students donate money online to encourage the child to keep reading. Funds are raised via these donations, as well as sponsorships from local businesses.
For every donation, the school receives 75% and the student gets 15% to spend at the Read-a-Thon prize shop, which includes things like school supplies, books, stuffed animals and electronics. Students that do not receive any donations or do not participate in the actual fundraising side of the program are still rewarded for reading by earning free books and prizes through the school library from librarian Mika Chetto.
Students are recognized daily for different reading accomplishments, and the top readers of each class are recognized on Friday each week during the event.
At the end, the class with the most reading minute average per student is awarded a prize, as well students who reach reading milestones and goals.
Where does the money go?
All funds raised stay with the school library to support reading efforts at our school, including reading clubs, events, books for our classrooms and book vending machine, and general support to the school library.
Anything purchased with Read-a-Thon money has to be approved by Bookworms, Green Lake School's Student Library Club.
History of the Green Lake Read-a-Thon
The Green Lake RAT was started in 2022 by Mila Chetto (class of 2023) as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award and IB Diploma Programme CAS project. She served as Project Manager for 2 years, and used the funds raised the first year to purchase a Book Vending Machine for the school Library. Upon graduation, she passed the RAT on to fellow Girl Scout Elliat Zodow (class of 2025) to ensure its continuation. Each year, the Read-a-Thon has grown bigger, garnered more student participation, and brought in more donations for the library. We hope the Read-a-Thon continues for many more years to come!
