Our library contains a wide variety of materials for grades 4K to 12, as well as professional materials purchased for adult educators. To ensure students are checking out books appropriate for their age and to preserve both student and parental rights, we have arranged our library in a way that clearly shows students what materials they have access to.
Our library is arranged with an "elementary side" and a "secondary side." Materials for students in grades preK-6 are shelved on the left side of the library (closest to the elementary side of the school), while all materials for students in grades 7-12, as well as adult professional materials and reference materials, are shelved on the right (closest to the secondary side of the school). Each book is cataloged and stickered with color coded labels to ensure students are checking out books appropriate for their age and development level.
E= Everybody books. These are traditional picture books that anyone of any age may check out.
FIC Elem (green sticker)= These are fiction books shelved on the elementary side that have been deemed age appropriate for children 12 and under. Anyone may check these books out, but they are generally aimed for students in grades 1-6.
FIC Elem (yellow sticker)= These are fiction books shelved on the elementary side that have been deemed age appropriate for children in grades 4 and up. Anyone in grade 4 or above may check them out.
Numbered Elem= These are nonfiction books shelved on the elementary side that have been deemed age appropriate for children 12 and under. Anyone may check these books out, but they are generally aimed for students in grades 1-6.
FIC HS (blue sticker)= These are fiction books shelved on the secondary side of the library that have been deemed age appropriate for middle school and high school students. Anyone in grades 7 and up may check out these books. Students under grade 7 may check out the books with written permission from the parent. In this instance, the school librarian will contact the parent of the children to inform them of the checkout request and provide a link for the parent to review the book themselves to see if it is something they want their child to have access to. The parent must email the librarian back with permission before the student will be allowed to check out the book.
FIC HS (red sticker)- These are fiction books shelved on the secondary side of the library that have been deemed age appropriate for teens in grades 10 and up. Anyone in grades 10 and up may check out these books. Students under grade 10 may only check out these books with written permission from the parent. In this instance, the school librarian will contact the parent of the children to inform them of the checkout request and provide a link for the parent to review the book themselves to see if it is something they want their child to have access to. The parent must email the librarian back with permission before the student will be allowed to check out the book.
Numbered HS- These are nonfiction books shelved on the secondary side of the library that have been deemed age appropriate for middle school and high school students.
REF- These are reference materials that may be used in the library but are not available to check out. These include encyclopdias, yearbooks, and other books that can not be replaced if they are lost or damaged. Reference materials are shelved on both sides of the library depending on the content and reading level of the material.
PROF LIB- These are reference materials purchased for teachers and professional staff that may only be checked out by staff members of Green Lake School District.
If you are not happy with the age or content ratings professionally designated by our Librarian, you have the right to request that your student's checkouts be limited to "Green Only" or "No Red." These are the only content limits that can be placed on your child's account. The Librarian will add a note to the student's account indicating your preference and will, to the best of their ability, prevent the student from accessing these materials. However, the Librarian can not be responsible for what the student reads while in the library, or if they access material obtained by friends, purchased at the Book Fair, accessed online, checked out using the self-checkout station, or read in classroom libraries. Parents must also understand that sometimes checkouts are beyond the Librarian's control if in the event a substitute teacher is managing the library, if the student goes through self checkout, or if a student removes library materials from the shelves without properly checking them out.
