Learning & Community

GlobeMed believes that transformative learning happens by doing, and that lived experience is the most valuable "expertise" there is! This is why GlobeMed's process of how we learn is defined by the continual cycle of exploring, discerning, acting and reflecting that happens throughout all our activities. Whether it’s going on GROW, running a campaign to raise funds for your partner, facilitating ghUs, or hosting an e-board retreat, this process of learning is embedded in all GlobeMed experiences. By providing intentional training, inputs and support in this process, GlobeMed enhances the leadership development of our members.

GlobalHealthU (ghU)

GlobeMed believes that our world has the potential to be a just world in which all people have the ability to not only survive, but thrive. To cultivate this potential, GlobeMed fosters innovation, compassion and thoughtfulness in chapter members through globalhealthU (ghU).

Why?

The purpose of ghU discussions is to empower chapter members to bring their perspectives and personal experiences to conversations of issues in global health equity, and equip them with holistic and thoughtful critical thinking skills to lead movements that target these challenges.

A commitment to learning is central to GlobeMed. Without asking difficult questions and thinking critically about how to dismantle oppressive systems which prevent health equity, we become part of the problem. The problem being that too often people rely on personal intuitions and assumptions about what's wrong in the world and how to "fix it" rather than taking the time to gain true insight to these many issues, acquire a deep understanding of the key factors and influences, and consider community leaders who are already working to make positive change in their communities.

What?

A ghU session constitutes the core of weekly general body meetings, and is led by the ghU coordinators in the form of group facilitated discussions.

It is during these sessions that chapter members are brought into a space of inquiry and exploration while gaining exposure to a diverse range of global health subjects and ongoing world events.

Topics discussed in the past include

  • human rights

  • political conflict

  • minority health

  • activist movements and policy

  • social determinants of health

  • accessibility

  • mental health

  • maternal/child mortality

  • topics relevant to your chapter’s partnership

  • current events on campus &

  • chapter members’ personal interests and passions!

How?

ghU's happen when thoughtful members join together and share knowledge. Yes, they are directed by a ghU coordinator, however the subject matter, breadth of discussion, and spark comes from members like you.

What better way to learn about the nature of the many ghU's which take place at our chapters then to watch one! Click any of the links below to learn more!

Brave Space Agreements

In order to foster a positive learning environment & build community, GlobeMed offers the following Brave space Agreements. Use these during meetings, events and during conversations with your partner.

Adapted from the #LetUsBreathe Collective and Showing Up for Racial Justice-Chicago

By entering this space...

1. I agree to love, forgive, and take care of myself

2. I agree to love others and build an inclusive community

3. I agree to be accountable for what I do and say

4. I agree to be thoughtful about choosing when I listen instead of speak

5. I agree to struggle against all harmful systems of domination I have internalized when they show up in my thoughts and behaviors

7. I agree to handle conflicts with love and respect, and resolve them through facilitated dialogue

8. I agree that my gifts bring value to this space, and I receive the gifts the space offers me

GlobeMed's Brave Space Agreements will guide your learning experience when part of your chapter. We hope this framework encourages you to give yourself personal permissions & challenges which will allow you to grow at your own pace. We know absolute perfection is an unfair ideal to set. We simply want GlobeMed students to foster community, inclusion and self care.

You are welcome to suggest additional agreements that will increase community to your chapter!

In the meantime, answer the question below.

Where have you felt most welcome? How can you recreate that feeling for others? What do you think makes or contributes to a healthy learning environment?

Answer below & interact with fellow GlobeMed member comments!

The next module will walk you through what leadership looks like at the student level within the GlobeMed network. It will also prompt us to reimagine what leadership looks like at all levels of society, and to ask ourselves what we want from the world. Click the button below to move forward.
