Dialects are regional speech patterns:
Associated with a social class is thermed a sociolect
Associated with an ethnic group is thermed an ethnolect
Associated with a geographical/regional dialect is thermed regiolect
A standard dialect or "standardized language" is supported by institutions, the French Language is supported by the Académie Française institution.
