Update on the Blackout App Trial
Following our trial of Blackout, which began in February 2025, we have reviewed our experience and made the difficult decision not to continue with its implementation at Glyn. This decision was primarily due to ongoing technical issues and challenges with reinstalling the app.
We remain committed to reducing mobile phone usage at Glyn and have observed that the Blackout trial did help to reduce phone use during school hours. We kindly ask that you continue to remind your child to keep their mobile phone switched off while on school premises. This includes mornings if students arrive early and spend time in the canteen. Our goal is to encourage positive social interactions, where mobile phones do not distract from conversations or engagement with others.
Our mobile phone policy remains unchanged, and any phones seen in school without permission will be confiscated.
We would like to thank Parents and Carers for your patience, support, and engagement during the pilot. While Blackout may not be the solution for Glyn at this time, the trial has informed discussions in PSCHE sessions about healthy mobile phone usage. Going forward, we hope to create further opportunities to raise awareness and reduce phone use across the Glyn community.
For those who installed the app, please remove it from your child’s phone.
Thank you for your continued support as we work to foster a school culture where technology is used wisely, responsibly, and for the benefit of all.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any queries via email r.hall@glynschool.org
