Power lines caused seven of the most destructive fires in California history, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It is necessary to shield lines from severe winds, birds, cars, trees and other external factors that cause wildfires and outages. This can be achieved by insulating power lines, replacing wooden poles with metal ones and clearing tree branches from lines or by undergrounding.
Because our community is partially buried and partially above ground the risk rating for the community is based on the latter. Underground lines may change the Risk Rating used by insurance companies.
This project is considered as ONE project for the whole community. Because of TRPA Guidelines for building (May 1 - Oct 15) the project will be completed over two or three seasons. We anticipate not being able to get passed Devil’s Gate (Slaughterhouse) underground. Those wires will likely be upgraded to the new NDPP standards for fire retardancy ie. above ground on metal poles with wrapped wires.
Yes. The reconstruction of the main transmission lines from Carson will be completed in fall 2023. Many of these poles are over 80 years old. This is vital for our community and the coordination with our underground project.

NVE is currently seeking approval for this from the PUC-Nevada. Most of the lines and equipment in Glenbrook date back almost 80 years.
Yes they will. Doing so provides the perfect opportunity to boost cable and communications services to our community.
If you are living in an area of Glenbrook with underground lines, highlighted in yellow in the map, the current plan to underground affects you as well. Each of those areas with underground wires is fed by the primary and secondary overhead lines that are the lines proposed for undergrounding. A fire started by an arc in the power lines does not know to stop at the edge of the properties already undergrounded. We have a community in extreme risk because of one ingress/egress. All homes in our heavily wooded area would be impacted by a raging fire regardless of their current power delivery system. It is our goal to have everyone in Glenbrook contribute as everyone benefits from fire mitigation, reliability and a line free vista.
Easements
No. NVE has prepared all easements necessary for the project and we have distributed them. Should someone choose not to participate, we will re-engineer the project to secure the powerlines onto a ductile iron poles on those properties. (For more information see the Easement FAQ page)
Yes. The individual homeowners with overhead service will have to change the home panel to an underground panel. NVE estimates this to cost $3,500 per panel. It appears that there are only 23 homeowners in this category.
Costs and Funding Sources
Current estimates have come in at about $3M per mile, and $16.5 Million for the project, with more than $6.5 million from NV Energy.
Yes. NV Energy will be contributing meaningfully to this project.
You can become informed about the project. Call any Board Member to discuss. You can Sign easements as soon as you receive and review them. You can volunteer to help our effort. You could donate to our Glenbrook Underground Corporation.
