In addition to trades training programs that are available through institutions such as Kish College, you may want to consider applying for apprenticeships for particular trades organizations. Here are some in our area that you may wish to check out:
Painters & Allied Trades District Council #30
Illinois Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 364

Mid-America Carpenters Regional Council

Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #23

International Union of Operating Engineers #150

It can take a while after you submit an apprenticeship application to be admitted and called in for training. If you do wish to go the apprenticeship route, consider taking classes at Kish or looking for other training opportunities you can take advantage of to gain skills in your field of choice while you wait to see if your application will be approved. As always, friends and family members who are current union members are excellent sources of information about how local unions and apprenticeship programs work, and in some cases can provide recommendations that can influence your acceptance into an apprenticeship program--talk to them about their experience!
