Characters You Should Know
Anne Shirley: First appearing in Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery in 1908, Anne is accidentally adopted by a couple who needs help working on their farm (they thought they were adopting a boy). While she isn't really useful in completing her chores, Anne's spunk and spirit livens up her new home and community. She is known for her active imagination, her dislike of her red hair, and her temper.
Alice: First appearing in Lewis Carrol's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, Alice believes that the world is orderly and stable, and she has an insatiable curiosity about her surroundings. The craziness that is Wonderland challenges and frustrates her by constantly doing the opposite of everything she expects and is comfortable with.
Long John Silver: First appearing in Robert Lewis Stevenson's Treasure Island in 1883, Silver is the tricky cook aboard the ship Hispaniola while also being the leader of a band of pirates. He is known for his cunning ability to hide is true intentions while also being very disloyal. He'll switch sides easily to fit his own needs. Some people think he is the hero of the story (Jim sees like as a father figure) while others see him as the villain.
Sara Crewe: First appearing in serialized short stories in a magazine in 1887, then again in a play in 1902, and finally the novel A Little Princess by Franciss Hodgson Burnett in 1905, Sara Crewe is known for her intelligence, imagination, and kindness. It is Sara's ability care about others and treat everyone with respect that makes her a truly memorable character.
Captain Crewe: Captain Ralph Crewe is a man of great worth who enjoys spending time with his little girl, Sara. It breaks his heart to take her to boarding school, but he always promised his late wife that she would have the best education. Before he leaves her at the school, he insists that Sara have everything she needs.
