Hate, disrespect, bullying, inappropriate or rude behavior, excluding others, and other behaviors that show a lack of character have NO PLACE in my class. I cannot hear or see everything, so please let me know if something happens that is disrespectful or hurtful to others! If you would prefer, we have the "See Something, Say Something" text line that you can use to confidentially report.
Students are expected to be productive and work diligently throughout the entire tutorial period. See below for suggested tutorial activities.
Students who need one-on-one support from me need to let me know and sit at the middle table.
Students are required to signup using 5Star in order to attend.
Students who are using tutorial to socialize or are not productive will receive a warning on the first offense. The second offense will result in a student being given an assigned seat near the teacher. The third offense may result in a temporary ban from my tutorial and a lunch detention. Students who are temporarily banned from tutorial will need to seek help before school, at lunch, or after school. Additional offenses will result in a referral to the assistant principal and a phone call home.
DO NOT CHEAT!! Plagiarism and cheating are very serious offenses!
Ø ALL cheating incidents will result in a referral to the Assistant Principal.
Ø Cheating will severely affect your grade in this class!
Ø See your Pacifica Agenda for more up-to-date details and consequences.
All summative assessments are required to be submitted to turnitin.com in order to earn a grade in Aeries. Some formative assessments will be required to be submitted to turnitin.com in order to earn a grade. AI is not to be used to complete writing assignments. Turnitin.com does check for AI use.
Students can rewrite summative essays for a higher grade. Students must attend a scheduled revision meeting in order to be eligible for a rewrite and must submit the revised essay within one week of the revision meeting. Revision meetings will be offered for a full week after grades have been returned.
Students are responsible for all classwork and homework in the case of an excused absence.
If you are absent the day an assignment is DUE:
You must hand it in on the day you return to school. (Additional time may be allowed at the teacher’s discretion)
However, for summative assessments, you will be expected to turn them in regardless of an absence. If you know you will be absent, you must make arrangements with Mrs. Lowry ahead of time. Otherwise, you must email Mrs. Lowry the assignment or have a parent submit it to the front office. Failure to do so will result in point loss.
If you are absent the day an assignment is GIVEN or an assessment is TAKEN:
Check the agenda slides and Google Classroom to see what was missed while you were gone. Email Mrs. Lowry with questions AFTER looking on your own first.
You are allowed one week from the day you return to school to turn in make-up work for full credit. If you miss the ONE week deadline, you will be given late credit.
It is your responsibility to make up absent work!
If you are truant (unexcused absence):
You will not be allowed to make up any work and you will not receive ANY credit for the assignment.
If you are present, but did not complete the work:
You are allowed to turn in Late Work of FORMATIVE assignments for up to an 80% of the original points up to one week before the end of the quarter. That means that the absolute best score you could get is a B- if everything was completed perfectly.
Summative assignments will have a case-by-case policy depending on the assignment. The late work penalty on these assessments may be more severe as students usually have more time to complete them.
All handwritten missing and late work must be given directly to the teacher before or after class!
For digital late work, you must email the teacher in order for the late work to be submitted. Include the name of the assignment in the email. When applicable, a link to the assignment included in the email would be greatly appreciated.
Homework is part of a student’s commitment to learning and should be completed on time and to the best of the student’s ability.
The amount of homework you have each night depends on your commitment and focus during class time. Unfinished classwork will become homework that is due the following class.
When reading homework is assigned, expect a quiz at the beginning of the following class.
Students are responsible for bringing the following materials to class everyday:
Tech Device and Charger (school issued Chromebook or personal device → bit.ly/phsbyod)
System of Organization (binder with dividers, ELA folder, ELA notebook with pockets, etc.) You may organize your materials for this class in a way that works for you, but you must have a designated and organized system. Shoving materials into your backpack does not count as a system.
Tool Kit:
Pens (several colors recommended)
Highlighters (several colors recommended)
Pencils
Post-It Notes (recommended)
A limited supply of classroom materials are available to borrow. However, it is strongly recommended that you provide your own materials.
Email me if you are unable to buy the necessary materials and I can provide you with what you need.
Students may choose to type notes and assignments unless I specifically require students to handwrite. If the device is used inappropriately, BYOD privileges may be revoked. Cell phones may not be used in place of a Chromebook, laptop, or tablet.
There will be consequences for students who do not bring their device to class.
First Offense: Warning
Each Additional Offense: Lunch Detention
ANY LOST OR STOLEN TECH DEVICES ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT. Make note of your Chromebook number, so you know which is yours.
Cell phones are not allowed to be used in class unless I specifically allow it. Students will place their cell phones in their designated pocket at the front of the classroom before the bell rings each day. All other personal technology (earbuds, tablets, computers, etc) must be put away unless instructed for use.
If a student must contact their parent or guardian in the case of personal emergency, they can notify me, and I will allow them to step outside to do so.
If a parent or guardian needs to contact their student, they may call the school and the call can be transferred to my classroom.
If a student needs to keep their cell phone with them on a particular day, they can notify me of the situation and exceptions can be made.
Participating in whole class and table group conversations is an expectation and will be a formative grade for the class.
Students earn their participation grade when they...
participate in whole class conversations
demonstrate curiosity and critical thinking
communicate their thoughts with peers
showcase collaborative skills
display elements of “PREPARE-HONOR-SUCCEED”
Raise your hand to ask permission to leave.
Students may not leave while I am giving directions or lecturing or during class discussions unless it is an emergency. If you have a medical condition, please let me know so exceptions can be made.
Only one student may leave the classroom at a time.
If the hall pass privileges are misused or abused, then your privileges may be revoked, you may be asked to turn in your cell phone before you leave the classroom, or we may change to a class hall pass system that only allows students to leave a certain number of times per quarter.
Class begins promptly when the bell rings.
Students who are not in their seats when the bell rings will be marked tardy.
See your PHS agenda for more up-to-date details and consequences.
Throughout the year, I may photograph class activities to publish on the school website, to showcase on my teacher Instagram account (elawithlowry), or to display for Open House. These will always be used to show off the positive things students are doing in the classroom. Upon signing the syllabus signature sheet, I receive your consent. However, if you would not like photos of your student published, please contact me via email. Students have the right to tell me during class not to take their photo on a class-by-class basis and may have photo approval if they would like.
