The Feelings Thermometer is a great tool for feelings identification and emotional regulation. Identifying how your student is feeling provides the information you need to ensure you're not meeting them at while they're in an elevated place.
How it Works:
When we go up the feelings thermometer, we're getting hotter, when we go down the feelings thermometer, we're staying cold. Take a look at the color categories to the left. Note that not all of us have all four colors. The thermometer to the left is just one example. We all have had someone in our life that is usually calm and then super hot, right? So, it's important to pay attention to kind of where they're at for the day. All of our thermometers, can look different. The things you do to regulate your emotions will look different depending on whether you are in the red, yellow, or orange zones. A deep breath may be all your student needs to feel regulated in the yellow zone, but they may need a walk around the block to regulate in the red zone.
Create your own thermometer, and have your student create their thermometer and compare!
