Introduction to the course
Students will be studying AQA GCSE (9-1) Physical Education
The course looks to develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of how to improve and develop health and fitness whilst developing their knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology.
What will be studied?
The curriculum covers the following content headings:
● Applied anatomy and physiology
● Movement analysis
● Physical training
● Use of data
● Sports psychology
● Socio-cultural influences
● Health, fitness and wellbeing
How is it assessed?
The course is assessed by examination and practical assessments. Students sit 2 papers each lasting 1 hour 15 minutes at the end of Year 11. Paper one focuses on ‘the human body and movement in physical activity and sport’, whilst Paper two focuses on ‘socio-cultural influences and well-being in physical activity and sport’. These are weighted equally at 30% of the final GCSE grade.
There is then a further non exam assessment (NEA). Content of this makes up 40% of the overall examination. Students will be assessed in three sports. Of these three sports two must be an individual sport and the other a team sport, or two team sports and one individual sport. Throughout the course pupils will have various opportunities to formally practice these sports. There will be an expectation that students remain after school hours on occasions to practice or to be assessed, and often encouraged to participate in competitive school fixtures for experience. Finally, students will be required to complete an ‘analysis and evaluation of a sports performance’ (written coursework).
It is strongly advised that students only select GCSE Physical Education if they are already competing regularly in sport outside of school hours due to the nature of the course. Students will need to link their written coursework to a recent competitive performance, therefore coursework is much more difficult to complete without appropriate experience.
