CALIFORNIA — Book support has been helping California wildfire victims that are in need of mental help since January.
On January 7, 2025, in the early morning, the Palisades fire started from a hot spot still, smoldering after a fire on New Year's Day. Police started getting calls about a new fire that people were noticing near the hills of Santa Monica. When firefighters arrived at the scene, the fire was growing bigger every second. Residents in that area raced to evacuate the vicinity of the fire, but the wind was so strong that trees were knocked down, which blocked the roads.
While the palisades fire was happening, there were other major fires going on as well. such as the Eaton fire, Altadena fire, and Hughes fire. With all of these fires happening at the same time, a local book venue decided to help the fire victims., They set up a venue near the burnt homes of people to help victims with mental health and started giving out free books to those who were affected by the fire.
A local resident named Asher who was affected by the fire stated. “It’s nice to know that other people care about books also and want to help people rebuild their collections.”

On January 22, 2025, ICE began mass deportation of immigrants in Los Angeles. Many undocumented people living in the US are scared and need to be aware of it and need to be careful.
As Donald Trump went into office in January, he ordered mass deportations. All undocumented individuals in the US of all races are in danger. Many immigrants have stopped showing up to their jobs due to the fear of deportation. This is a recurring problem as it has happened during Trump’s first term which was January 2017- January 2021. As the immigrants stop going to work, inflation prices continue to rise which will end up affecting the whole community.
Although many people are not familiar with the topic, it is important for people to be updated. A recent update from CBS News on February 4, 2025 reported that immigration detention has reached 109% capacity. This story connects to inflation because fewer employees at work means rising prices in the future. Although the immigrants detained are undocumented, they all still have a right to an attorney. Many may not be up to date with the topic depending how involved with the news they are.
As these mass deportations continue, the community and culture are beginning to protest. In downtown Los Angeles it's been going on for a while on a streak, blocking streets and interfering traffic. It's even gotten to high schools where students have been allowed to stage a walkout and march to downtown Los Angeles. Shutting down the main street overpass of the Hollywood (101) Freeway, they eventually rallied near Olvera Street to march towards City Hall. Police reported that the demonstration was peaceful, but students were marching in traffic lanes which is affecting people getting to places they need to be and being able to get to work on time. Students are even going around covering walls of their campus with chalk saying "Immigrants make America great again," "Mexicans make the world go round”, and more.
On February 3rd, there was a “A Day Without Immigrants Boycott” where no one went to work, school, or bought anything to show what it is like without immigrants. On that day many people went out and protested. Ever since Trump regained the presidency, many immigrants have become frightened and many began to not go out anymore. People have stopped going to work, stopped taking their kids to school, and have even stopped going out to go get groceries. There were fewer and fewer people out in the street or out in the shops.
