Through this course, I learned that, more often, the media in the Middle East is a frequent censorship victim, a challenge that is orchestrated by the political cadre. Even in the modern world and almost similar to the end of the Ottoman era, the press, journalism, or media in most Middle Eastern countries is confined to the traditional system organized by the political class and based on the culture of respect and obedience to the political authority (Essoulami, 2006; Mellor et al., 2011; Ouellette, & Gray, 2017).
Contrary to what I have explained above Sheikh Jarrah’s situation confirms that the media is not only controlled by states or authorities but also by the owners and operators of these media platforms. Therefore, I was helped by the readings of this course to understand that media freedom is being threatened, by censoring, limiting, and shutting down social media accounts of Palestinians to limit their effect and advocacy of the occupation happening in their lands Instagram as a company to stop the Palestinian voices from spreading. This course showed the importance of the media as an instrument for fighting brutal treatment, as was the case with my research study.
