11:00 AM – Charity Miles

The virtual service project is through Charity Miles. Anyone who wants to participate can simply download the app, choose a charity, open the app and move! For every mile walked, run completed or dance done, you help earn money for the charity of choice, which is funded by a corporate sponsorship pool. In the midst of this self-isolation period, brothers across the country can enjoy the outdoors while raising money together.

The Fraternity recommends selecting Special Olympics (National APO Partner), St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or Operation Smile as the charity of choice.

Our Chapter name is Alpha Beta Xi

12:00 PM – Comfort Cases Cards

What a better way to support others than by helping kids in foster homes. They need our love and we are very eager to write to them!

STEP 1: CHOOSE BETWEEN THESE 2 OPTIONS:

a) Handwritten Letters – Grab your paper, construction paper, markers, scissors, glue, stickers, etc. and write 10 letters to kids in foster care. If you choose to hand write your letters, email us so we can give you the address to which they need to be sent!

b) Online Cards – Get creative and make 10 virtual cards that can be printed and sent to kids in foster care. You can use postermywall.com to make a letter and then download (either as jpg or pdf).

STEP 2: UPLOAD YOUR CARDS (whether it is handwritten or online) to our Virtual Showcase Folder

Click here to access the online google drive

STEP 3: SIGN UP ON APO ONLINE

If you make more than 10 cards, you can earn more service hours!

Have fun and get creative! Here are some guidelines:

  • Keep your greetings gender neutral, examples include: to a very special person, hi there, hey you!
  • Exclude the date (day, month, and year) , sometimes these cards will not reach the intended recipient until later in the year.
  • Be kind and thoughtful in your letters, remember that this is often a one way letter exchange!
  • Embrace creativity, include drawings, stickers, personal anecdotes, anything to make your recipient smile!
  • Avoid talk about politics or religion, the word God etc.
  • Share a little about yourself: hobbies, family, work, school, pets, travel, anything you are passionate about!

1:00 PM – Brother Pal

Brother Pals! What better way to stay engaged with other brothers from different chapters than by writing to them? We need to stay connected and an awesome way to do so is to virtually write some letters. Follow the instructions below to write some awesome brother pals!

  • Open the folder here
  • For an hour of service, you will need to write 5 letters so feel free to choose your first template, then another, and then the last one. Make each letter special and different than the last one.

3:00 PM – Cranes 4 Cancer

Referred to as the “bird of happiness,” origami cranes symbolize hope. It is said that for every 1,000 origami cranes created a wish will come true. Help us reach our goal of creating 200,000 cranes for the cancer patients at Primary Children’s Hospital. #cranes4cancer

The Crane has long been a symbol representing good health, longevity, and truth. The crane is often referred to as the “bird of happiness.” Traditionally, it is believed that if 1,000 origami cranes are folded, a wish will be granted such as long life or recovery from illness. As a result, it has become popular to fold 1,000 cranes when someone is diagnosed with cancer.

The cranes are often strung together on strings and given as gifts of hope and healing. Please join us in creating 200,000 origami cranes for the children and families fighting cancer at Primary Children’s Hospital. Each year at our hospital, almost 200 children are newly diagnosed with cancer. Make a crane and send a wish of health and healing.

Visit cranes4cancer.org to begin making yours! Make at least 20 for an hour of service! Log it in on APO Online!

4:00 PM – #REELWomen

The Problem

From 2007 to 2012, only 30.8% of the speaking characters in the top 500 movies were women

The Solution

Women are more likely to be successful when they see that other women who look like them are successful. Promote the concept of diverse women in film by creating and sharing a new protagonist you'd like to see represented in Hollywood.

Use this template to create a new, empowered protagonist with #goals (that aren't all about "getting the guy"). Have fun, be creative!

Caption It

Post your picture on Instagram with the hashtag #ReelWomen, and tag @apo_geneseo_service. In the caption, tell us why representing diverse women on screen is important to you!

5:00 PM – (NOT) THE SAME OLD STORY

The Problem

Older adults who feel lonely or isolated have a higher chance of depression and physical decline. Aww...

The Solution

One-on-one interactions with older people have been shown to fight that isolation and cheer them up. Hooray!

Write the beginning of a story and put it on the google drive which will be mailed to a senior who lives far away. Ask them to continue the story and send it back to you to finish.

SUBMIT YOUR STORIES HERE.

6:00 PM – #GeneseoCARES Challenge

Here is the list of Geneseo Cares Acts of Kindness
