To our Community,
Alpha Phi Omega condemns and denounces racism, brutality, hate, violence, and bigotry as we call for all of Alpha Beta Xi to stand with our Black community members in the battle against inequality and systemic racism. Along with the resources that were sent to members of APO on Saturday afternoon by the Chapter President, we have also been working on ways to bring about ACTIONABLE change. As a co-ed service organization, that change starts with each and every one of us.
In order to provide real-time support to the Black community, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Beta Xi will be donating the remainder of the unused service and contingency budget funds to 6 social justice organizations. We want to give the members of APO the power to decide where they would like their donation to go to. At Alpha Beta Xi, we will commit to donating $5 for every brother that signs this google form and chooses an organization. We invite all active, associate, and leave of absence members of APO to fill out the form and pledge their support by Friday, June 5th at 12 PM.
Moving forward, we’re honored to announce that in an effort to dismantle inequality, promote anti-racism practices, and work towards social justice, we have developed three concrete plans to help foster this change. First, all members of APO will be able to be a part of a diversity, inclusion, and equity professional development workshop at one of our first meetings in the Fall. This will help educate everyone within our organization about these topics as well as challenge us to think about how we, as a collective group that espouses the pillars of Leadership, Friendship, and Service, can appropriately, passionately, and collaboratively fight for social justice. In addition to this PD workshop, we will continue to promote our Diversity & Inclusivity chair position as well as proactively think about ideas to best support our incoming pledge class in learning about these topics. We welcome the thoughts, ideas, and suggestions of all APO members in order to ensure we are moving forward as a progressive collective unit.
Secondly, our Vice President of Service and Service Secretary will diligently work on building a social justice service curriculum over the Summer for members of APO to use in the Fall. As we promote and conduct our service projects, it is important that we have various social justice service opportunities available for our members to partake in. The new curriculum will be built to help guide members throughout their understanding of social justice and the social justice impact we can and will make with our work.
Last but not least, in an effort to bring about collective action and change, we are currently working on a social justice day of service, titled “X 2020” and will be collaborating with the Office of Student Volunteerism and Community Engagement. We will begin our outreach to network and collaborate with more SUNY Geneseo organizations and offices in order to raise more awareness across our campus. “X 2020” will focus on the root causes of systematic inequality and will allow us to collectively work on various service projects to bring about change. We will be determinedly researching various service organizations that align with our vision for the fight against inequality. The three main areas we will be focusing on are battling socio-political inequalities, economic inequality, and health inequalities. In order to ensure APO members’ voices are heard, we will be opening up a committee for interested members to help plan and execute this event. Please join us in delivering this change. Together, we will fight and work for social justice.
In the meantime, please continue to show your solidarity and lead by example. We have attached some resources for you to use. This is just the beginning of the work we must do to promote change.
We invite you to share your ideas/suggestions/plans to us so that we can all be a part of the collective action.
Yours in Advocacy, Solidarity, and Strength,
Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Beta Xi
