Week Eight - October 18th, 2024
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well.
Our students are excelling in a number of areas and I was delighted to be invited to present certificates to winners of the Poetry Recital Competition as part of the Emirates Festival of Literature. Well done indeed to runners-up Shriya (G3) and Shatakshi (G5) and to winners Shaurya (G4) and Farida (G5). These four students were asked to recite their poems in front of the whole of Grade 5 and parents, which they did exceptionally well! Thank you to Ms Louise and our Literacy Coordinator, Ms Sam, for the invitation.
Another student who has excelled recently and also won a major competition, is Shahem H (Grade 11). Shahem claimed first place in Automoto 2024, out of 500 people. He was responsible for the creation, design and actual building of a motorbike. Shahem said, ‘I think I won because I focused on the small details of my bike, while trying to make it look as simple as possible’. It looks far from simple, Shahem, and we all say a huge well done!
GIS is a very active school and community, so it was a delight to hear how well the GISPA organized ‘Shimmer and Shake’ class went. This was not a type of drink, but actually dancing, yoga and meditation! Well done to all parent participants.
Finally, I continue to promote the benefits of an IB education, and on Wednesday gave a webinar to over 50 people. The questions from those attending were astute and relevant and I was able to reinforce how the IB, for all ages, is more cognitively demanding than a ‘memorization-regurgitation-assess’ style curriculum, and places demands on students to use critical thinking skills and a creative approach to problem solving.
On Thursday I travelled to the IB Global Conference in Budapest. I am representing GIS and GEMS and have two meetings with IB senior leadership, to discuss IB strategy in the Middle East. I shall also be supporting Mr Ged, who is giving a presentation on the Career-related Programme, entitled ‘Same destinations, different journey: the development and growth of the CP’. I am sure he will do us proud!
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
Thank you to everyone who supported Women’s Health Week by purchasing the delicious cookies to benefit the Jalila Foundation and attending all the workshops. The week would not have been a success without your participation. We wish you all a restful and well-deserved break!
The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Our Iranian, Egyptian and Latino parents have already started to welcome returning and new parents on a nice breakfast gathering.
We encourage all GIS communities to get together and keep us posted.
