Week Eight - October 18th, 2024
Dear Parents & Guardians
One of the final acts of the Secondary StuELT each year is the coordination of Spirit Week. This year we moved away from the focus just being on dress down days and incorporated activities that brought the students together more. The result was a vibrant celebration of school pride and community spirit! Students showcased their creativity and enthusiasm by participating in a variety of themed dress-up days, including Hawaiian, pink accessories, hats and jersey Day. In addition senior students enjoyed ‘Anything But a Bag Day’ where they brought their school supplies in anything that was not a bag. Some students were extremely creative in thinking outside the box with this. School supplies arrived in baby strollers, coolers and even a giant inflatable flamingo! Each event brought a wave of colorful outfits and energy to the school hallways. The week also featured an exciting scavenger hunt that encouraged teamwork and exploration, alongside the development of new school chants that united students in cheer. The highlight was the Spirit Olympics, where classes competed in fun challenges, fostering camaraderie and friendly competition. Spirit Week not only energized our school community but also created lasting memories as students came together to celebrate their school spirit!
This week, our Grade 6 students enjoyed an exciting field trip to Air Maniax where they had a blast enjoying the opportunity to mix with friends and build new connections. It was a day filled with laughter, teamwork, and unforgettable memories, further helping our younger students to settle into life as a secondary student. I would like to thank Mr Sean for his organization of this event and the teachers who assisted in supervising the trip.
Also this week, we held the inaugural Grade 12 Movie Night, filled with suspense and excitement as students gathered to watch a scary movie in the Senior Hub. The atmosphere was relaxed while students munched on pizza and popcorn! As the movie played, screams and laughter echoed throughout the Third Floor! It was a fantastic way to embrace Spirit Week while strengthening the connections within the senior class!
We are thrilled to announce the new members of the GIS Student Executive Leadership Team (StuELT) for the upcoming academic year. After a rigorous selection process, which included refining CVs, participating in panel discussions, and interviews with senior staff, our successful candidates have been appointed. Their specific roles were revealed during our StuELT handover assembly today. Please join me in welcoming our new team members:
We look forward to their leadership and contributions to our school community! With the new team coming in, it is time to say farewell and thank you to the 2023/24 StuELT. To Manya, Nada, Suhani, Ezra, Devsubash, Rania, Sanjna, Monique and Ria, thank you for your dedication to GIS. You have given hours of your valuable time to our school community and for this, we are extremely grateful!
Finally, I would like to remind families that next week we will be on Mid-Term Break, a time to refresh the mind and body! School with resume on Tuesday Oct 29th for students, with Oct 31st and Nov 1st being PTC days (Normal school timetable for Grade 12's however!) I also take this opportunity to share that Term One Progress Report will be made available through the GEMS connect app later this afternoon.
Enjoy the week ahead
Kind regards
Ms Amanda
