Week Six - October 4th, 2024
Dear Parents,
I hope that you are well. It has been such a pleasure seeing so many familiar faces this term and also getting to know new parents.
I am also meeting so many students this term, in informal and formal settings. This week, I was interviewed by KG2 children and also by Grade 2, for their unit on teamwork. It is enjoyable but quite challenging being interviewed by primary students, as you never know what will be asked next!
I had to wear my gym kit on Tuesday morning, as I was invited to be part of a Grade 10 student led circuit training class, as part of their PE programme on leadership. Well done to all the students who organized this – I am still aching!
I was delighted that our new sports hall has opened this week! Mr. Ryan took a class into the large space and Mr. Ranjit and I were there to celebrate.
Our Grade 11 student, Riti P, had achieved extraordinary success in an international competition, ‘For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology’ (FIRST). Riti’s team, representing the UAE, secured second place out of 193 countries participating!
There are so many workshops happening at GIS this year and the dynamic start to the term will continue. This week saw a Multilingualism presentation, which was well attended by parents. This subject is relevant to nearly all our families, given the huge number of languages spoken. Myths were shattered and the good news is that literacy is enhanced, vocabulary broadened and even dementia kept at bay if one is fortunate enough to maintain two or more languages. My thanks to Ms Niamh, Ms Mariam and Ms Leigh-Anne.
The yearly Plant A Legacy (tree planting) took place on Monday, the 30th of September at Al Tadweer Waste Management Center. There were close to 120 students yesterday and 400 trees were planted. As Ms Anrie says, ‘We are extremely proud of the students who joined us and are very excited to see what this year hold for us in the Eco and Sustainability initiatives.’
Kind regards and have a good weekend,
"Thank you to the Russian community for taking the initiative and coming together for a warm and welcoming breakfast."
The Country Ambassador program was launched in 2021 with the intention of helping connect families with their motherland tongue and country. Small community sub groups have been created to help integrate new families from these specific countries as they enroll at GIS. We encourage you to join your country group via the QR code.
Although as a whole, we are one big family, it’s always nice to connect with those from our country. Ultimately, the goal is to have at least ONE representative for each country.
If you see that your country or ambassador is not listed and you are interested in representing your country, please reach out to us via email at gispa@gemsisak.com
Our Iranian, Egyptian and Latino parents have already started to welcome returning and new parents on a nice breakfast gathering.
We encourage all GIS communities to get together and keep us posted.
