Week Six - October 4th, 2024
Grades 6-12
Ensuring Additional Support for All Students.
This academic year we are launching a new support initiative for all students at GIS. Academic Priority is a system of academic support for students that they can access in addition to their regular classes across all departments.
Each department holds a session once a week. The exact timings and locations for each department can be found on the Academic Priority Schedule posted below. This is also available on ManageBac.
Academic priority is staffed by teachers from the departments, ensuring that students have access to the teachers they need. Any student who needs additional support, has a question or just wants to discuss a particular topic is welcome at Academic Priority. There are no fixed topics for a session. The teacher will provide support based on the individual student’s needs on a particular day.
In addition, teachers make themselves available to any student who needs support whenever possible. We are looking forward to the impact Academic Priority will have on our students progress and attainment.
Grades 4,7 and 8
The yearly Plant A Legacy (tree planting) took place on Monday, the 30th of September at Al Tadweer Waste Management Center. GEMS Legacy School hosted this initiative, yearly. Over 5000 trees have been planted in the past to which GEMS International School has contributed. The event aims to teach students about the importance of trees in the environment, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 15 and 11, focusing on life on land and sustainable communities. We planted 400 trees on the day.

GIS students shine at The First Global Challenge as International Robotics Olympics 2024
We are thrilled to announce that Riti Paghdar, a Grade 11 student, represented the UAE at the FGC International Robotics Olympics, held in Athens, Greece, from September 26-29, 2024. Competing against 190 teams from across the globe, Riti's exceptional skills led her to win the silver medal and earn an impressive second-place finish. This achievement is a proud moment for all of us, showcasing the talent and dedication of our students on an international stage.
We proudly announce that Grade 8 students Santhosh Ramanan and Arth Dutta represented our school at the FGC in Kazakhstan on August 9, 2024. Our team reached the semi-finals, a commendable accomplishment in this highly competitive event. Furthermore, Santhosh and Arth were honoured with the Ahmad Yasawi Award for International Unity, acknowledging their exceptional collaboration and spirit of global teamwork. This achievement is a testament to their dedication and embodies the values of unity and cooperation.
What is FGC?
The FIRST Global Challenge is an Olympic-style international robotics competition each year in a different country. This year, students from over 190 countries united in Athens, Greece, to participate in this event. Teams collaborated to complete tasks, aiming to foster understanding and cooperation among the youth as they use their skills to solve global problems.
THEME:
This season’s theme, "Feeding the Future,” focused on sustainable food production. The season will highlighted the need to simultaneously improve economic, social, and environmental impacts to create a sustainable food system. In the Feeding the Future Robotics Challenge game, teams manoeuvred their robots on a playing field, emphasising the intricate and interdependent relationship between water, energy, and food systems. They carefully managed and balanced global resources to support a sustainable food system.
Grade 9
In Grade 9 we have just completed a unit in Moral, Social and Cultural Studies called: “Being An Active Citizen”. We linked our studies to the Sustainable Development Goals and Service as Action.
One of the activities in the unit asked students to: Identify people you know who have helped a community you are a part of, and what they did. I would like to share a few responses:
“Ms. Anrie has helped my school community because she initiates recycling drives every year. She is strong, determined and dedicated.”
“An example of someone who helps the community is my mother. When we lived in Angola she did charity work, made donations and even taught Math to children in the villages for free. And, when we lived in Malaysia she volunteered at a refugee school where she taught Math.”
“Mr. Simon works every day to try and make the school a better environment.”
Students made posters of outstanding Emirati Citizens and also created brochures to spread awareness of the organizations around us that do good work.
