Week Twenty-Eight - April 14th, 2023
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Welcome back to another term.
I do hope you had a wonderful Spring Break wherever in the world you may have spent it.
It was wonderful to see the Secondary students return to the classroom this week. I would like to praise the vast majority of students who ensured that they arrived to school in correct school uniform. Well done!
Linked to our focus on setting the right tone for learning, I hope you received the email from Mr Nic, sent earlier this week, regarding mobile phone use in school. Your son or daughter received the same information to ensure a consistent message has been shared. Should you not have discussed the contents with your child, we encourage you to do so.
Earlier this week, Ms Nomah arranged a special screening of The Ramadan Movie for our Islamic students. The students were delighted to view the movie in the MPH and were also engrossed in listening to Ahmed Hamed, a former board member of ‘Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for World Peace’. Thank you Ms Nomah for organizing such an event during this holiest of months.
While we have just returned for Term Three, our Grade 12 students are experiencing mixed emotions as their final day at school draws closer. This coming Wednesday we will say farewell to our oldest students with the annual ‘Walkthrough’ and final assembly. Our Grade 12’s will commence study leave from April 19th as they prepare for the start of the IB Exams which begin across the world on April 27th. While there are some anxious weeks ahead, we have every confidence that our Grade 12’s are very well prepared!
Best wishes
Amanda

Last year, the amazing Student ELT launched the Secondary Student Hub for secondary students. This is an ongoing collaborative project between the Student ELT, Inclusion Team & Grade Leaders.
The Secondary Student Hub will remain the students access point for the new social groups and peer mentoring, as well as signing up for the already established peer tutoring programme.
Students will also be able to find links to ECAs, student voice initiative, counsellor referral forms, mindset matters and homeroom information. We are really proud of the work that the Student ELT have put in to this so far and look forward to seeing their expansion of the site.
*Students must be logged into their gemsisak gmail account to access the site.

Grade 9
Students produced impressive information boards designed to inform their audience about different wars that they had researched. Arian Nasari (9C) dazzled us with this fantastic display.
Grade 7
Final products from the Term 2 Textile classes. During this unit, students developed their design and technical skills to create these wonderful felt monsters.
Grade 8
Final products made by 8C for their Term 2 clock project. Each student had to choose their own target audience to design and make a creative and unique clock based on their target audience's needs. All students outdid themselves and made some excellent products!
Grade 11
In our most recent unit, students have been learning about different festivals in celebrations in the Hispanic world. This culminated in a speaking summative presentation, where students chose a celebration from the Spanish-speaking world and informed the rest of the class (in Spanish) about the festival.
Grade 9
Grade 9 students have been exploring characters from the script ‘Hoodie’ through monologue work, delving deeper into the minds and lives of these characters. Students created their own scripts, and performed these monologues with great confidence and creativity.
Grade 12
The grade 12's completed the final service learning interview where they got a chance to showcase the projects that they had done over the course of two years. One student called Kabir did a project on being a student swim coach, and how he showed his skills and how it benefited him as a learner. "Swimming coaching taught me to be organized and more confident in talking to other people ''. This was done before the Grade 12's graduated.
Homeroom begins at 8:10am, following the UAE national anthem.
students are considered late if they arrive to class after the anthem.
Monday to Thursday: 3:15pm
Friday: 11:40am

Digital devices, such as smartphones and tablets, make online platforms and content easily accessible. And, while there are many benefits of seamless accessibility and connectivity, there are also many potential risks - to the health, well-being and even the safety of young people - that must be considered by young people themselves, as well as by parents and schools. Technological advances are faster than ever and new online platforms are released at a rapid rate, making it challenging to effectively monitor and control (for their own well-being) the online activity of the young people in our care.
Young people will, at times, seek out and/or be inadvertently exposed to inappropriate online content. If and when this is the case, it is important that they feel comfortable and confident to disclose and discuss the matter with trusted adults. While banning smart devices may not be practical (or desirable), implementing agreements around device usage (for instance) is a healthy and productive approach to online media balance and safety. There are a number of useful tips and strategies available to support healthy and well-informed approaches to media use. Please take some time to explore the E-safety: Parent Guidance, which has been created to support GIS parents in this regard.
