Carolyn Roberts (UBC) - 2025
Carolyn Roberts uses her voice to support Indigenous resurgence through education. She is a Coast Salish woman belonging to the Squamish Nation—her birth mother is from N’Quatqua Nation and her birth father is from Tzeachten Nation. Carolyn is an Indigenous academic who holds two degrees from UBC: a Master of Education in educational administration and leadership and a Bachelor of Education. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from Capilano University. She has been an educator and administrator for over 20 years and is currently a faculty member in the Department of Education at Simon Fraser University (UBC website).

Weaving Indigenous Education into Practice
Integrating Indigenous knowledge systems into classroom practice takes understanding, patience, and time. All educators explore this with intentions of engaging in meaningful, and authentic ways. Resources to guide and assist in this work in S.D. #73 include the BC First Peoples Principles of Learning (FPPoL), and The Seven Grandfather Teachings. Consider how these teachings exist in your daily practice and how you can further develop/highlight Indigenous worldviews and perspectives within what you already do.
Read about turtle, eagle, beaver, bear, swan, coyote, and salmon. How can we embed and teach these values in classrooms with students? How can we do this in ways that are inclusive of Indigenous learners and connect to their identity and experiences?
Include Indigenous storytelling and Indigenous children's literature. Ask your school or district librarian for recommendations!
