With school in full swing, we hope you found last month's newsletter informative and supportive during this unique school year. The first few months have definitely been a learning experience for the entire Hawk Family; from our students, to our parents and to our faculty and staff. Our journey of learning continues TOGETHER. It is important that we celebrate these successes small or big because it truly models our School Motto.
We have many exciting things planned for this school year. Every month, students have the opportunity to earn Hawk Points by participating in school tasks mentioned on our monthly newsletter, school web page and on Instagram. Participating in these tasks not only earns you Hawk Points that can help you qualify for a prize packet, but it is also a great way to show your HAWK PRIDE!
A huge THANK YOU parents, students, teachers, staff and administrators for continuing your efforts in making this school year safe, productive and educational. This shows that our HAWKS value and RESPECT their education. When you respect your education, you are respecting yourselves as well as the teachers that work hard to create these lessons through different Models of Learning. When you follow expectations for hard copy or online assignments, you are respecting others as well! Taking time to do the simple things such as remembering to write your names on assignments, bundling assignments by subjects, being on time with assignment submissions, doing your best and putting your best effort into what you’re learning can go a long way. We may not get to physically be together in a traditional school setting at the moment, but these small actions help build great practice into your character and truly models RESPECT. Continue to practice showing your respect throughout the school year by doing those simple actions. These simple actions are best shown through: Responsibility, Effort, Support, Participation, Excellence, Cooperation and most importantly, Trying your best!
Exploratory classes or what is better known as elective classes, give students the opportunity to experience everyday life skills and work skills. Through elective classes, students are able to develop and expand their interests for their future careers. Students are also able to develop and strengthen their creativity, drive, passion, self-esteem, and better understand themselves. Don’t pass up on your opportunity to learn more about these life and career skills.
F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School currently offers the following exploratory courses Band, Choir, Art, Intro to Business, Journalism, Business and Technology, Physical Education, Health, CHamoru Language, and Cultural Arts.
Here is what some of the elective teachers had to say…
“Vocational/Technical education provides relevant and cost-effective education for work skills needed now in the community. In today's internet-based economies young people including middle-schoolers are finding business opportunities to be "Influencers" in marketing products or media outlets. In my class, we learn Digital Citizenship, internet pros and cons, and how to leverage technology to support the student's business or social goals. We often "connect-the-dots" between what we learn and examples of successful youth businesses in existence today. This provides opportunities and motivation for our students to connect and take serious education in all their classes as their circle of influence grows with their age. “
Mr. McManus, Business Technology
“During these challenging unprecedented times, when we must be mindful of social distancing and staying home as much as possible, music has a unique way of connecting us with others. In both Advanced Band and Beginning Band, students are interacting with each other, having fun, playing music games, and sharing their creativity. Our online class periods fly by! Sometimes the digital lag makes it sound as though we are making mistakes when we try to play music together; still, we just share a good laugh and try to move on. Electives are more “hands-on” in nature, which students genuinely enjoy. Electives provide a little “spice to life” experience as we strive to provide a well-balanced education for all students.”
Mrs. C. Flores, Band
“The aim of Introduction to Business is to build a foundation for a future relationship with the student and the business world. Making memorable events through the use of student driven projects such as the creation of their own business with their classmates, helps to foster leadership and communication skills which they can use well into the future.”
Mr. Naz, Intro to Business
“In Home Economics, students will learn the importance of how diet plays a major role in preventing chronic disease and supporting good health. They will also learn skills that will empower them to make healthier food and beverage choices.”
Mr. Calilung, Home Economics
“Anywhere you go in the world, you'll hear the native language of that country being spoken everywhere. My class (CHamoru) is important as it is designed to educate students of the land they call home.”
Siñot Garrido, CHamoru
“PE is needed to increase the physical competence, health-related fitness, self-responsibility and enjoyment for all students so that they can be physically active for a lifetime. Teaches them important life skills about teamwork, competition, and ethical behavior. “
Mr. Deseo, PE
